Oh! I was tagged by [livejournal.com profile] bodhifox and didn't know it until I saw [livejournal.com profile] klostes's post in which she indicated that *she* was tagged and I thought, "I wonder...?" and lo, I was. So, I am apparently one of the last to do this:

1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the next 3 sentences on your LJ along with these instructions.
5. Don't you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest.
6. Tag five people.

"Suddenly it seemed to him that the sky, which was already black, was becoming blacker than ever, and that a thick heavy cloud was rolling down on him. At the same time he felt a violent pain in his knee. With the incalculable rapidity of imagination, he thought it was a shot that had struck him, and he expected every moment to hear the report."

This is from The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, and it was the top book on the first stack of "to-be-read" books that I stumbled across on the floor in the dark, it being after 1:30 a.m. and poor Peter is sleeping while I read and write into the night. I'm embarrassed to admit I've never read this book (well, it along with too many others to count -- that's why there are stacks of them on the floor, waiting to be read. I can't not buy books, even in the midst of a four-year bout of fanfiction frenzy that keeps me from any honest literary pursuits -- but oh my, the rewards for reading teh fanfic are many and wonderful. And educational!). I bought it recently at Borders, as part of one of their Buy-3-Get-1-Free type deals, and it *does* sound good. Soon, soon...

Oh, and I don't think I'll tag anybody, because you've all already done this one, right? *g*

I love Dumas! "The Three Musketeers" is really the best of all of his but "The Man in the Iron Mask" is so good, too. Honestly, "The Count of Monte Cristo" is a wonderful story but it is a bit harder to get into...

Thanks for the recs! I've always *meant* to read Dumas -- classics and all that. But then I discovered this online stuff, and my list of books-to-be-read has just grown and grown ever since...

I always feel like Dumas is writing out of time, which of course he was but I can feel it. He feels a bit like a reverse Jules Verne to me if that makes any sense.

Any time I hear Monte Cristo I get hungry for a sandwich. Like now.
