So today I bit the bullet and shelled out the money to buy the maximum-100 userpics, and then I went to the various icon communities to which I belong and saved a bunch of really pretty icons to my hard drive. Now, I know all these icons are in jpeg or png or gif format because LJ doesn't support bitmap, right? And what I do is, right-click on the icon and choose "save picture as" and save it to my icon folder. But every single time I save one, the only option I'm given for format is bitmap. So they all end up being saved as bitmap icons, and then I have to ask my husband to convert them to jpeg so I can upload them to my userpics on LJ -- because while they're in bitmap format I can't bring them in to my journal.

So what am I doing wrong? It seems to me like there's some weird setting on my laptop that only gives me the bitmap option while downloading. But I'm so technologically challenged, that's just a guess. Peter isn't familiar with LJ or icons so doesn't really know what's going on either.

I double-checked my theory by looking at the properties of some of the icons I wanted to download and they were definitely identified as jpeg files on LJ.

Anybody have any ideas? What the heck am I doing wrong?

Thanks, y'all!

I have had that exact same problem! But I don't remember how or even if I fixed it. Think I just started using another browser. Can you try that?

(I could have sworn I replied to this this morning. Oh well.)

Thanks, I tried Mozilla and it worked great. D'oh!

I've got that same problem, Sally! It's really annoying, especially as it means that I have to save any animated icons by emailing them to myself. They'll email as gif files but I can't save them as gif, only bitmap.

Whenever I save an icon, it saves as bitmap, then I open the bitmap, click on file at the top and choose 'save as' from the drop down menu. That gives me the option to save it as a jpeg. Then I go and delete the bitmap version.

It's annoying, it's long-winded and it's a heck of a lot of messing about! So if you find a remedy, please let me know too!

Btw, thanks for the rose. ::hugs:: :oD

Changing browsers worked (Mozilla seems to handle it well). I tried using your method to change some of the bitmaps I downloaded, but my set-up seems to be quite different -- I don't even get a "save as" option when I click the file button. Oh well, at least one problem is fixed! Thank you.

I tried MagickalMolly's suggestion and it worked! I'll know what to do next time now. :oD

Thanks for the hint about using Mozilla though. ::hugs::

Clear out your cookies and saved browser history - that should fix the problem. On the top of your browser, there should be "tools" - click it, then select "options" and then press the button that will delete all cookies. you don't need to clear out the history, too, but it's good to do it from time to time anyway. When you're done, close your browser, re-open it, and then try saving an image - it should save it as a jpg (or png or whatever it is).

Thanks, sweetie! I tried this but it didn't help -- switching browsers did, though. *Hugs*

Looks like you're getting tons of great teccie advice from your friends (plus I didn't know how to fix this particular problem). I just popped in here to say thanks for the lovely rose and happy belated Valentine's Day!
