Yep, the Fall Quarter has begun. Not that things slowed down during the summer, really -- but suddenly the campus is so crowded -- so many interruptions -- so many people stopping by with questions. But it's exciting, too. I think fall is a particularly manic time for me; I'm much more inclined to get things in order and clean house then, rather than the proverbial spring cleaning. That's why I spent the whole weekend two weeks ago putting the attic and book loft in order, getting things out of Kidlet's room, and clearing out under our raised bed, which has been home to boxes of letters and memorabilia as well as the Hidden Den of the cats. Sorted and eliminated a bunch of junk, and the rest got stowed away into plastic drawers instead of crumbling boxes.

So of course the memorabilia-sorting put me under an odd spell of nostalgia lately. Even went so far as to google my first love -- and lo and behold, found some references. So I've joined this thing online called Tribe.net just so I could send him a message -- anybody heard of that? It seems to be sort of a forum set-up, sort of a blog option, sort of a dating service (!), designed for connecting with those with like interests, and by region. And I can*not* figure the damn thing out -- makes LJ seem downright easy.

On another restless front: my child is growing up. She'll become a teenager in two week -- yikes. And with her increased independence and reliance on friends for companionship instead of mommy and daddy, I've got more time on my hands. I'm seriously thinking of looking into volunteering at the Rescue Mission homeless shelter.

And that Tribe.net thing? Has re-opened my eyes to the wonderful things that people do out in the world, when they're not absorbed with raising kids. I'm casting about for a creative outlet, and wishing I could be involved with Renaissance Faires or somesuch (though there are none put on locally). Where should I cast my lot?

And here I am drowning in technology...fneh. I don't miss the card catalogs, don't get me wrong, but I am never going to prefer to read something on-screen over paper. It ain't happenin'.

Sam's going to be thirteen in October. That's part of why this is a good time for me to go back to school, even though he's very immature for his age. All the same, we can trust him alone after school and be reasonably sure he isn't going to burn the house down or accidentally cut off an arm, and that goes a long way. ;D

I still have a little Brother electric typewriter from Sears, which Sam thinks is a grand little museum piece!, and I own but can't use (it's broken and *forget* trying to get it fixed) a Royal manual, which lives in a dusty black case. I learned to type on manuals, as well. I used one until about 1987, actually. 'Cause I'm stubborn. *nods*

'Cause I'm stubborn. *nods* Heh -- and that's one of the reasons we loves you so.

Yeah, you've found yourself a great outlet for the kid-growing-up time of more freedom -- I'm proud of you and glad for you. I'll just have to give it some real thought for myself. Don't think I'm even remotely interested in getting back to any school setting. Maybe I'll resume my guitar lessons. I'd like to do something people-oriented, getting back in touch with creative people doing neat things. Or maybe I'll volunteer in some capacity -- actually do something useful. *Sigh* We'll see. Maybe I'll just get over it and drown myself in more fanfiction. Which, truth to tell? is finally getting *old*.

Amazing, isn't, the time kids growing up leaves you? Though I'm still waiting to experience a lot of that. Spousal Unit is talking to Midlet about going to school; I'm not sure what to think about that.

Memory lane is a good place, and I'm like you, far more likely to clean and organize in the fall, rather than the spring. We may start painting next weekend, even.
