Rosh Ha'Shana begins at sunset tonight -- the Jewish New Year. I think the Jews have it right; I've *always* felt renewed at this time of year, invigorated, more apt to start projects and reinvent myself than on January 1. Partly it's the season -- I love the turn of weather toward autumn, and the slant of light, and the crispness in the air. And I love looking forward to the long (and admittedly overdone) holiday season of Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Hannukah/Christmas. It's a time for homemade soups and breads, and spices like ginger and nutmeg.

Partly, too, it's due to the start of a new school year, since in some way or other I've spent most of my adult life connected to the academic calendar, and now I have to shepherd Kidlet through it too. Okay, she's in junior high school and suddenly acting very mature -- I can shepherd less now!

But beyond that, I've always done a "fall cleaning" rather than the traditional "spring cleaning" -- I have more energy, my spirits are up and bright -- I'm just *excited*!

I guess tonight we'll have matzo ball soup and apples dipped in honey, a traditional treat for a sweet new year.

A Sweet New Year to all! L'shana Tovah (sp?).
