So, it's Friday morning at just 9:30 a.m. and so far I have:
Arrived late to find panic-stricken ABD student just in from the mid-west to file the diss, only to have the essential faculty member *also* be late and final memos yet to be written -- much soothing and calming of nerves ensues;
Encountered fragile young woman in the hall announcing to the world that she doesn't feel well, got her to a chair to sit and sip some water while trying to get enough information through the tears to decide if the paramedics need to come (they do) (fortunately co-worker used to work in a group home and has *much* experience with calling 911 so she places the call -- I learned a lot from her this morning), ushered emergency team into office with gurney before continuing with the above dissertation debacle;
Found the new TA in the copy room and while chatting discovered she hasn't had time to get herself on the payroll and is working for free, so undertook consulting with the various people involved (one to provide the necessary funds, one to be the hiring agency, none of them communicating to ensure this girl gets paid) to get her a paycheck -- turns out same co-worker has been pulling the threads together and is on top of it so she *will* get paid on time.
So with any luck this day will end with the ABD becoming a PhD, the sick girl getting well-taken-care-of and all better, and the TA getting paid. If it all works out I'll consider my job done (for now). And hey, don't I have the best co-worker?
