Sally's 100, Then.
November 22nd, 2002 11:48 amOh well, everybody else is doing it; I can't resist a bandwagon. My first reaction was that I should definitely NOT do this; I spill way too many secrets about myself on LJ as it is. But let's give it a go, and I'll try to be good:
100 Things You Might Not Know About Me
1. I love vegetables. I really do. Especially spinach and chard and winter squash.
2. I'm a chocoholic; I used to eat plain M&Ms until I became so ill I couldn't stand them anymore. Thought I would cure myself that way. Heh.
3. I am a Chaucer snob. I will only read it in the original Middle English, which I adore and love to read aloud. Never has the English language sounded so... mellifluous and European. Favorite quote: "Love is a thyng as any spirit fre.."
4. I still have the first part of Chaucer's General Prologue from the Canterbury Tales memorized. "Whan that Aprille with his shoures soote..."
5. It took me ten years to get through junior college, and I didn't start until four years after I graduated from high school. Thus I didn't get my BA until I was 32.
6. That was because every time I met a new guy I got thoroughly distracted.
7. I didn't get married until I was 32. I was considered the old maid of the family.
8. I had fully accepted that I would live single my entire life.
9. When we first started dating, I very gently told my future husband that I wanted to "only be friends". He was very persistent.
10. When I finally fell in love with him, I fell hard and permanently.
11. But he was afraid of marriage, so I finally said: I get married by the time I'm 32, or never. I was very persistent.
12. I offered to propose, but he insisted that he would, in his own time. Traditionalist.
13. He proposed on New Year's Day of my 32nd year on a mountain trail overlooking our city and the ocean. I blushed.
14. I LOVED being a bride and had an incredibly fun wedding. I felt just like a fairytale princess that day. But that's the only time.
15. I adore poetry, and love to read it aloud. Nobody will listen to me though, so I read it aloud to myself.
16. I love Dylan Thomas, e.e. cummings, and the Victorian Romantics.
17. For years I read Dylan Thomas' "Poem In October" aloud and alone at dawn on the mountainside on my birthday. It's a birthday poem. It's wonderful.
18. I was a terrified undergraduate student and never spoke up in class if I could possibly help it.
19. My favorite teacher publicly yelled at me for being late to class one day and I was mortified.
20. In college I was a quiet, studious English major by day and a belly dancer at night. I loved that and kept it secret.
21. I almost had a nervous breakdown at a meeting for prospective honors students. I so knew I didn't fit in with those confident scholars who were so close and comfortable with their advisors.
22. My advisor had to sneak it up on me because I could not accept that I was worthy of honors material. "We could take this seminar paper and spend next quarter working this into an honor's thesis, you know."
23. In fact, self esteem has been my biggest battle all my life.
24. I play a little guitar and a little recorder and a little mountain dulcimer. None of them well; music is a serious challenge for me. But I can play zils almost as fast as
magickalmolly, I bet!
25. I was too ashamed of my voice to sing out loud for most of my adult life, unless with very, very comofortable friends.
26. I finally took voice lessons because my husband did, and I wanted to join the Gilbert & Sullivan group that he performed with.
27. I sing okay now. Not great, but okay.
28. I love to belt out songs in the car by myself.
29. I crochet and embroider and sew, but I don't have the patience for knitting or cross-stitch.
30. I love costumes. I regard my entire wardrobe as costumes. Some are just costumes for work, but they're still costumes. Some are for hippie-me, retro-me, sexy-me, comfortable-me, etc., but it's all costumes.
31. Play a guitar and sing to me and I am all yours.
32. That definitely worked the first time. When I was 16 and he was 27. But he sang... for me!
33. I started drinking and taking drugs when I was 14.
34. At 14, some of my friends and I got into somebody's big brother's stash of pills and took what we wanted according to color comibnations. I want the red and yellow one, and that blue one...
35. We all survived. With most of our brain cells intact, too.
36. I experimented with lots of drugs, including LSD, but my body didn't handle them well and so I was spared any addictions. I never used anything with a needle.
37. I thought if I was drunk or high I would be cute and funny and lovable. That self esteem thing again. Unfortunately I got lots of positive reinforcement for that -- everybody did like me drunk and high.
38. I still drink for relaxed social interaction.
39. I will not touch pot or anything illegal now, because of my fear of having my child taken away from me.
40. When I set my mind to it I am a damn good cook.
41. I took a cake-decorating class once and I know how to make those roses out of frosting.
42. When I was a child I wanted to be a nun. I thought it looked so peaceful, and I thought they all sang.
43. Also as I child I was quite taken with the idea of martyrdom for one's faith.
44. Also as I child I got hold of somebody's book on the history of torture and read the first few chapters in absolute morbid fascination. Now I cannot bear the idea of torture, or understand the mindset that allows it.
45. I can still get hold of some incredibly disturbing, dark things and read them with the same morbid fascination. And feel filthy afterwards.
46. I am living a more full and rich life since
daisy_gamgee got me into LJ.
47. I feel 100% bonded with
daisy_gamgee,
chrystimd,
indigo_moon, and
haleth since our get-together in San Diego last month. I love them very, very much.
48. I adore Pippin Took and Merry Brandybuck. Okay, y'all probably already knew that one.
49. I adore them even more together and in love, in THoU. *Slash*!
50. But I especially adore when Merry is protective of Pippin, because that's what I missed so much in the original LOTR.
51. I am probably less interested in the actors themselves than anybody else here.
52. I have a collection of over 200 cookbooks. Not counting the little checkout counter paperbacks; I have dozens of those. I have about 5 cookbooks just on the cooking of pumpkins and squash.
53. I used to fantasize that I would make my own bread every week.
54. My fantasies have changed dramatically of late.
55. I have so much sex on my mind lately that I think I know exactly how an 18-year-old boy must feel.
56. Good slash fanfiction (you know who you are) sure helps in that regard.
57. My husband is a little pissed that this didn't happen a few years ago when he could keep up with me better. Poor guy. I feel *so* sorry for him... It's a good thing he's a couple years younger than me, though.
58. I use ellipses entirely too much...
59. My creative writing really, truly does suck.
60. I am not keeping up well with my NaNoWriMo writing. Not at all. Not even ten minutes a day.
61. That is because I got sidetracked on the internet. Not a good thing.
62. I am thrilled by a really loud, strong thunderstorm.
63. I wonder why so many of my "first times" are disasters.
64. My first time sailing was a disaster.
65. My first time on a horse was a disaster.
66. These will probably turn into posts in my LJ.
67. My first boyfriend was a disaster.
68. My first lover was a disaster.
69. I love dangly earrings and hoops, and big stretchy bangly bracelets. And if I'm going to wear jewelry, I'm going to overdo it -- I prefer two or three necklaces to just one.
70. I will try almost any kind of dancing, but I detest Irish step dancing. I don't understand anything that holds the upper body so immobile.
71. I am perfectly comfortable getting up and dancing all by myself at a disco or rock 'n roll kind of place. Or dancing with a girl, or girls. Who needs guys?
72. I like to really let loose when I dance rock 'n roll. Hands in the air, eyes closed. But often as not there's too much bellydancing thrown into the mix.
73. But if there's nobody else on the dance floor, I'm way too shy to get up and dance.
74. The sweetest kiss I ever had was at a Renaissance Faire, on a bridge, with an unknown harlequin in a mask who was selling kisses for $1. I paid my money, tipped my head up, and closed my eyes. It was just a delicate, soft touching of lips. I was about 22 or 23, and alone.
75. He felt the same way -- he pulled back, startled I think, and said "Sweet..." I wondered what his other $1 kisses were like, to get that reaction.
76. I admire dark beauty over fair beauty. I love brown skin -- I think it's beautiful. And dark hair.
77. I sometimes wish I was a person of color.
78. I often wish I could walk in other people's shoes. I want to know how everybody feels and what every experience is like.
79. I hate it when I'm timid and shy.
80. I like to pretend I'm very strong and very fierce.
81. But I actually am strong. In a lot of ways I am the strong one in my marriage; I've always had to be, and it came to me in a dream before I married. I scaled a scrubby cliff, then turned to help my husband up. It was a very clear dream. It didn't frighten me.
82. Mostly we maintain an equal partnership though. We work well together.
83. I have been up past 1 a.m. for most nights this week, scouring the internet. And I'm tired.
84. I've learned a lot about myself in the last two weeks. I love that I still surprise myself.
85. I can fix any office machine with a letter opener and my hands. If I can't, only the repairman can.
86. Even though I don't always have the energy to comment, I read all my friends' LJ posts.
87. If I could live on mashed potatoes and gravy, I would.
88. I am almost as keen on honor as a Klingon. Almost.
89. I adore some, but not all, of the Pre-Raphaelites. And in an art museum, my heart is drawn first and foremost to the paintings, then to the statues, and rarely to the decorative arts.
90. I also adore Renoir and Van Gogh and the Impressionists.
91. My parents almost called me Bonnie. It was either Bonnie Jean or Sally Ann, and they compromised on Sally Jean. Whew. I don't feel much like a Bonnie.
92. I am a little bit New Agey, but I'm also very much a skeptic. I can't deny my own experiences, however, including prescient dreams and run-ins with ghosts.
93. I love crystal jewelry. I don't attach any spiritual value to it, I just love it when it's pretty.
94. I have only really meditated once, and then I had visions.
95. I'm a little bit prone to visions anyway. Too bad I'm such a piss-poor writer.
96. I once waltzed in an empty, moving subway car in New York at 1 a.m. with one of my student helpers. But I think I already told that story, didn't I?
97. There really is a menage a trois story, but it is not a happy or fun or "whee! sexy!" story and it was non-consensual (I mean, having the third party join in was non-consensual). Some gloomy 3 a.m. that story will probably end up as a post in my LJ and it will be TMI and I'll regret it.
98. I sometimes wonder about guardian angels, because I've been in so many strange situations and have remained unscathed. Sometimes I feel charmed, or protected.
99. I am amazed at how my love for new friends and for new experiences and for life continues to grow.
100. I am amazed at my strong feelings of love for all of you on this LJ friends list.
