shiredancer: (Dickens books)
Oh! I was tagged by [livejournal.com profile] bodhifox and didn't know it until I saw [livejournal.com profile] klostes's post in which she indicated that *she* was tagged and I thought, "I wonder...?" and lo, I was. So, I am apparently one of the last to do this:

1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the next 3 sentences on your LJ along with these instructions.
5. Don't you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest.
6. Tag five people.

"Suddenly it seemed to him that the sky, which was already black, was becoming blacker than ever, and that a thick heavy cloud was rolling down on him. At the same time he felt a violent pain in his knee. With the incalculable rapidity of imagination, he thought it was a shot that had struck him, and he expected every moment to hear the report."

This is from The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, and it was the top book on the first stack of "to-be-read" books that I stumbled across on the floor in the dark, it being after 1:30 a.m. and poor Peter is sleeping while I read and write into the night. I'm embarrassed to admit I've never read this book (well, it along with too many others to count -- that's why there are stacks of them on the floor, waiting to be read. I can't not buy books, even in the midst of a four-year bout of fanfiction frenzy that keeps me from any honest literary pursuits -- but oh my, the rewards for reading teh fanfic are many and wonderful. And educational!). I bought it recently at Borders, as part of one of their Buy-3-Get-1-Free type deals, and it *does* sound good. Soon, soon...

Oh, and I don't think I'll tag anybody, because you've all already done this one, right? *g*

Go here and search until you can find five suitable quotations to make up a Manifesto of sorts... gacked from [livejournal.com profile] bodhifox, and again I might be the very last to do it!

Language exerts hidden power, like a moon on the tides.
Rita Mae Brown, Starting From Scratch, 1988

You can't have a light without a dark to stick it in.
Arlo Guthrie (1947 - )

Setting a good example for children takes all the fun out of middle age.
William Feather (1908 - 1976)

Differences of habit and language are nothing at all if our aims are identical and our hearts are open.
J. K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

You may be disappointed if you fail, but you are doomed if you don't try.
Beverly Sills (1929 - )
