Ashes and Smoke, Redux

Seems I spoke... er, or wrote... too soon in my last post. We are again dwelling beneath the ashes and smoke. Tonight's moon, full up in the sky, was a dark orange -- so strange, when usually you only get that effect while it is low to the horizon.
Our latest fire, the Sedgwick Reserve (donated to UCSB by Edie Sedgwick's family, I believe) is burning in the valley behind us. We toured it with Kidlet's 7th grade science class, and it's a beautiful spot... or was. I hope the fire is contained quickly. Back there, it's nature's way -- that's how many of the native plants are propogated. Wildfire is all part of the plan.
All the southland fires going on today, though -- that's a way different story. Some were set deliberately, others caused by downed power lines, and the Santa Ana winds are blowing and blowing. The Malibu fire started down the street from my brother's old house. They sold it earlier this year and moved to Palm Springs, and boy are we glad. Not so good for the new owners... we don't know if the house was burned or not, but if so, I'll be very sad. It was (is?) a beautiful home and we had many fun gatherings there.
I have cousins in San Diego County, friends in Santa Clarita, and a very dear friend in the old Leisure World near El Toro. So far everybody is safe, but I'll have to do some checking tomorrow *frets*.
My heart and my best thoughts are going out to the half million people evacuated in the last two days, and the firefighters and volunteer crews. Bless!

Date: October 24th, 2007 02:39 pm (UTC)I'm about as far from the San Diego fires as London to Liverpool (300k or so). We're good... just *cough* breathing a little bit of smoke.
