Late on Friday

shiredancerI'm the only one here in the office. It's 4:15 and one of the professors had a final paper due at 4. The main office is all dark and locked up; there's a sign on the door *right at eye level* directing everybody down the hall to *me* for assistance, with an arrow pointing the way.
There is also a handmade sign on the door, courtesy of moi, saying "Prof. X's papers" with another, bigger arrow pointing to me. My light is on, and my end of the hall is all lit up and bright and shiny and welcoming.
The box to collect the papers is on a chair, in the brightly lit hallway, outside my open door, with an *orange* sign proclaiming for all the world to see that this is where the papers go.
I have spent the past hour listening to exclamations of "The office is closed!" "Where do I turn my paper in?!" "Oh my god!" "Where do I go??" and various other hints of great alarm and distress. Then they finally make it down the hall, sometimes after I've hollered "Read the sign!" or "This way!". And then they stand at my door and say "So where do I put my paper?"
I'm trying very hard not to pound my head on my desk.
I think it's a very *good* thing that spring break is next week. These kids obviously need it.
