So Peter Jackson and his entourage are not the *only* stars in town this weekend (rumor has it that Liv and Viggo will be at the award presentation... what, no hobbitses???). No, it is also Oprah's 50th birthday (what a copycat!) and since she apparently resides here now, this is where she's hosting her big bash. Well, not *here* as in my corner of the town... no, she lives in *Montecito* which is the exclusive, fabulously wealthy area where most star-types live. Huge, huge estates with acres and acres of land and villas and walled properties and mile-long driveways and reflecting pools... and you get the idea. Her guests are filling up the most posh hotels, like the San Ysidro Ranch where JFK and Jackie spent their honeymoon, or the new Baccara resort where Streisand stays when she visits (and where I wouldn't deign to set a foot because their security is so uptight they hassle the nearby beachgoers who presume to get too close). But I wonder if her 50th birthday bash could possibly be as good as mine was?

Cuz, I'm here to say, mine was *GREAT*!!! I know I never said anything about it, so here goes: the party happened. People came! I was thrilled and honored. I bought the nifty off-shoulder, crinoline-skirted black dance dress, got the nails manicured (and so did my daughter, who *adores* manicures), rented a helium tank, bought pink ballons and rose-printed napkins, and made some hummus. We had the balloons, a pink rose cake, and so much beer and wine and champagne that *nobody* could get through it all. Everybody brought delicious food. The DJ was really wonderful, with a disco light machine and smoke effects and the *best* dance music, and we just danced and danced and danced. And you know what's really cool? I think I had exactly 50 guests show up. And they were all the very best people from all walks of my life (except, sadly, my online life -- I would've *loved* to have seen y'all there!), and they intermingled and chatted and got acquainted and danced with me and seemed to be having a really good time. And me? I chugged two glasses of white zinfandel and got the most incredible, perfect, happy buzz you could imagine -- just the *perfect* kind of tipsy drunk (and I'm a bit of a connoiseour of such things... and no, I don't know how to spell that damned word!). So I was glowing and sparkling and dancing and being my little ol' charming best. It was just *so* *much* *fun*. And then I did my belly-dance, which for some reason, despite me being at my all-time highest weight and three sheets to the wind, was very well-received and applauded, and I felt very floaty and beautiful, which is odd in itself. But there you are, it's one of those things where it's better to be on the giving end... Oh, and people showed up with presents! Who'd a thunk? I didn't think people gave adult birthday presents... but I don't think I've ever had a birthday party as an adult, either. 'Twas fun. Lots of body lotions and creams and such... think they're trying to tell me something? And an outrageous hot pink hat trimmed with sequins! But my favorite gift was a little statue of Ganesha, the elephant-headed god of the Hindu pantheon, who according to the neat little book that came with him, is the Clearer of Obstacles. I set him up on my desk at work rightdamnquick (as Daisy would say) and told him to get to work!

And I discovered that I have the most bestest family in the world. All my siblings came, and my parents, and they danced with me even when everybody else was tired, and my niece and my daughter had a blast, and it was so great and loving, y'know? Even my mom who uses a walker would get up and dance a few minutes, and my bent-over dad (they're 83) too. So yeah, I was filled with happiness for my 50th. Makes the number seem not so bad after all. *Big happy smile*

Speaking of three sheets to the wind, that's about where I am now. It's been a helluva week at work and after getting the nominations in for new student fellowships, all I could think of was a good, stiff, drink. So here I sit with a nice glass of that same White Zinfandel, and a plate of Mexican food, and I am *so* ready to relax.

I wish I could have come! Well, or not, because 50 people I don't know? I would have been freaking out. Sounds super-lovely, though. Image of your parents dancing is so sweet! Also, you looked hot in the belly-dance costume. <3

Thank you Haleth! And you might have been surprised -- these people were remarkably easy to get along with. Oh, and they weren't all there at one time -- some came early and others came later. But it would have been fun to have you there!

Sweeting, they all were. I just wish I had had my camera ready when Lisa flashed us. Damn...

I even got to see Daisy's. (well, mostly. does a tank top count?) Now if I can only get her in that coin bra...

Hey! I want a COPY of that picture! ;-)

I'm so glad you had such a wonderful birthday--twice, even. ;-) Just goes to show that being you when I grow up is a good thing. But if we'd all come, you'd have had more than 50 people there. Throw off your statistics.

I'm finding that 3 shots of rum is enough to give me a nice buzz...
