It must be spring; I'm starting to crawl up out of the annual dreckage of late winter and feeling like there's a newness and a brightness around me. I did warn that I would be submerged by my job until May, and I was spot-on. So just past mid-April, here I come. And work has indeed been busy and dull and repetitive and at the end of my fifth year at this job, the endlessly repeating cycle of it is starting to get to me. Not that I'm going anywhere; can't afford to quit, and don't want to -- it's still a good job, just... all the same.

And I'm emerging from a round of home-upheaval too -- we had the (trashed) downstairs carpet ripped out and replaced with fake wood, you know, that laminate stuff. So while we were all torn up we had the downstairs painted as well, and a new front door put in, and all new baseboards, and everything from the downstairs has been living in our bedroom for the past month. Our little condo is pretty much all one room downstairs, a living area bending into a dining area bending into a galley-size kitchen, all in a circle around one supporting wall. And upstairs is just two bedroooms and a loft/attic we had built into the cathedral ceiling. So upheaval in our home is *seriously* felt. But now it's done, and looks clean, and the new floor is pretty, if sparse, and the only drawback is that it will probably take months, if not years, for me to get everything back in place. I'm slow that way.

Other signs of spring: I'm getting an urge to mess around in the garden. Now, "garden" for me is a small brick patio with some planters on it, and that's really all I can handle. Last year I didn't even feel the slightest urge to get my hands in the dirt, but this year I can feel it flickering. Hmmm, some lettuces and Swiss chard surrounded by marigolds (my idea of organic/companion planting) and maybe some flowers. Tomatoes never work for me; they always get covered with some black spore-looking stuff and I don't know what it is. Maybe some herbs too; fresh basil is a must.

I walk out by the campus lagoon and the ocean about twice a week with my friend, and the California poppies have been blooming among the iceplant by the sand. They're a gorgeous variety, golden yellow blending into orange, and oh but I love seeing them. The ocean has been a changeable treat too: some days a steely blue-gray, others the most incredible deep blue covered with white-caps (those are the days when you couldn't pay me to be out in a boat; I know what those white-caps mean), and just recently there was a day with the most spectacular turquoise color. I love my ocean. [livejournal.com profile] linaelyn and [livejournal.com profile] who_took, I've seen you mention beaches longingly in your journals -- come to my beach, I'll make sure it's worth your while!

Okay, rambling here -- it's rare that I post with actually nothing to say or even a "writerly" itch to scratch. Until later.

Missed you!

We have beaches in CT, but the ones near me are across the bay from the nuclear power plant, which sort of detracts from the whole "beachside enjoyment" thing.

Oh, I remember the beaches in CT! I was last there in about 1994 or 1995, I think, on vacation to Rhode Island, and we went to that... castle? estate? that tourist place, anyway, and then a famous beach... gah, I can't remember any of the names! Anyway, the water and beach were lovely. I have such fond memories of Connecticut...

Do you mean Gillette's Castle (http://www.ctrivervalley.com/4/attractions/gillette_castle_state_park/)? I was there last weekend with the dog - took some pictures (not very good ones, though), too. Wanna see??

Yes, that's it! I remember going there as a child when I lived in CT. I'm glad you could figure out what I was talking about. Yes, I'd love to see pictures!

Do you ever get to the submarine base at Groton? I remember playing on the model subs on the grounds...

Oh, and I think about you every time I play my new ABBA Gold CD.
