We survived the first day of junior high school! Kidlet did fine, of course, and I managed to figure out the time-management details of afterschool pickup followed by dance rehearsal and errands. I'm not entirely sure how we got to be in the position of having her start school without any kind of daily pickup plan in mind. Two days a week I get off early so I can take her to dance class; the other three days just sort of... eluded me. Somewhere in my tiny brain I was thinking "bus" and having her get home by herself for just the hour and a half until I got there. But, um, no. No bus route from the school to us. So as of last Friday I was without a plan. Fortunately another mom and I got to talking while waiting for the homeroom posting to go up -- they live within walking distance of the school, and she offered to have Kidlet walk home with her daughter and stay there doing homework until I pick her up (the daughter and Kidlet have known each other for years). Yay!!! Saved! A plan at last. Not without huge holes, like the fact that the school's schedule is totally bizarre this first week. But at least it's a start. *Whew*

Whew, indeed. We've been suffering through a heat wave. None of us slept much last night, partly from the heat and partly from excitement. I'm me-e-e-lting.

And today is the eighteenth anniversary of my wedding. We're too busy to celebrate properly, but I bought a couple slices of truly decadent chocolate cake, and we had it with some wine. Mmmmmm. Happy Anniversary, Honey!
