So, a week and a half ago I dashed off across the country and spent a very wonderful and delightful weekend with
daisy_gamgee, who, as you all know, is a Truly Lovely Person.
So, the thing is, this California girl... woman... thang... needed to blow town for a couple of days because my child is having severe separation anxiety over going off to 5th grade camp on Catalina Island (and, might I say, I myself have *never* been to Catalina, lucky kid) and we, working with a family counselor (and god, that was a concession on my part, as I just don't like this trend of hauling kids off for therapy all the time) decided to do various "practices", including mommy being gone for a couple of nights while child is safe at home with daddy. So, since it has been a good long while since I have had an adventure of my very own, I hastily arranged plane tickets and took off for the other side of the country. And after holding my breath during the take-offs and landings (because, truth be told, flying scares me), I floated down out of the cloud cover to find... snow! Everywhere! This being Pennsylvania and all. Although we were having a minor heat wave in California. Oh god, the contrast was lovely. Way too exciting. The Gamgee household was bemused.
Oh, and Daisy, besides being so lovely herself, has a *wonderful* family and I got to meet the famous Mr. Spouse (who is as nice as can be, and cooks up a damn fine pot of spaghetti to boot) and fabulous daughter
rae_lindorie and adorable son Sam, who has a lot of monkeys. They live in a cozy, warm, and welcoming hobbit-hole with such East-coast mysteries as a basement (huh? a basement? don't have those here in California, at least not in my town) and filled to overflowing with books, and books, and books, and some other various media, and Daisy's Lair which is (have I used this adjective before?) *wonderful* and I got to read the drafts of upcoming chapters of THoU
*SQUEEEEEEEEEEE* and Daisy thoroughly indoctrinated me in the delights of "Maurice" and ohmigod, THAT KISS is everything she said it was and more and I watched it spellbound over and over and over until we drove the rest of the household to distraction almost.
And we had beer in a great little local restaurant where the waitress tried very hard to help this California girl find something really good and yummy and local on the menu, and the crabcake sandwich absolutely filled the bill for that, and we had citrusy-tasting beer and pierogies too, and I have become so addicted to pierogies which of course you can't get in my town. And we went to one of the famous bead shops and some funky shops and a shop with sex toys in the back *blush* and I threw a snowball at Daisy (on orders from
indigo_moon) and *actually hit her with it* which is something of a miracle considering my less-than-stellar pitching abilities, and damn but that weekend was *wonderful* and was over way, way too fast.
And we had slumber parties both nights, staying up late late late and talking more and more drowsily but getting to say almost everything we've wanted to say and discuss and talk about, and even better was in the morning waking up and talking even more. On Saturday night I was struck by a Blondie song on the radio so Rae Lindorie called it up for me on the computer and after three beers I danced around a bit to "Call Me" and we were generally goofy and silly. And we had brunch at a place called, believe it or not, "Eat and Park" with an all-you-can-eat buffet and boy, did I ever, including more pierogies and happy-face cookies and four kinds of potatoes. Mmmmmmm. And I met all the cats and the dog, and they hung around a bit more than usual for a stranger which was very flattering, and Ruby-cat only got really friendly in the middle of the night when she purred in my ears and rubbed her fluffy tail in my face and woke me up.
It is really, really, one of the best things I've done for myself in a long, long time of good mommyhood. I loved it, I love Daisy, I love Daisy's family and home and pets and town, and I sure hope I can go back again some day.
Thank you Daisy, for welcoming me to your home and making me feel so very welcome and comfortable there! You are a treasure and a dear, dear friend, love.
